Products and aids for medical keto
KetoCal, Liquigen, K.Yo, MCT and other products explained
When you or your child starts a medical ketogenic diet, you suddenly encounter many new names and products.
KetoCal, Liquigen, MCT, K.Yo, K.Quik and MCTprocal are examples of products you may come across. Some are complete ketogenic nutritional products, while others are mainly used to provide specific types of fat or to make it easier to compose meals with the right nutrition and ketogenic ratio.
What isn't always obvious when you're new is that several of these products can also be used as ingredients in food. They don't necessarily have to sit alongside the meal as a separate product. Depending on the product and the individual meal plan, they can for example be included in smoothies, sauces, soups, yoghurt, desserts, baked goods, drinks and other calculated ketogenic meals.

What is Liquigen?
Liquigen is an emulsified MCT blend consisting of approximately 50% MCT source and 50% water. Liquigen is used when MCT is part of the dietary treatment and is not a complete nutritional source on its own.
Why is Liquigen practical in food?
One of the challenges with adding regular fat or oil to food is that the oil can separate from the rest of the dish and for example form a layer of fat on top. Liquigen behaves differently. Because the MCT fat is emulsified with water, Liquigen has a creamy consistency and is designed to blend well into food and drinks. The emulsified form means the fat doesn't separate the same way as regular MCT oil. This can make it easier to work the MCT fat into the dish itself rather than the oil sitting separately.
How can Liquigen be used in food?
When Liquigen is part of the user's individual meal plan and calculated recipe, the product can be used as an ingredient in various types of food and drinks.
Liquigen should be shaken before use. The amount should follow the individual meal plan.
In short: Liquigen is MCT in an emulsified form designed to blend more easily and evenly into food and drinks than regular oil.
MCT and MCT oil
MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides. MCT is a type of fat that can be part of certain forms of medical ketogenic diet. It's important to understand that MCT is not the name of one specific product. MCT can be found in different products and forms.
MCT oil and Liquigen are not the same
MCT oil is oil. Liquigen is an emulsion of MCT and water. They can therefore have different consistencies and different practical properties when used in food.A regular commercial MCT oil bought in a store or online should not automatically be considered a direct replacement for an MCT product that is part of a medical meal plan.
In short: MCT is a type of fat. How MCT is added to the diet can vary, and different MCT products have different properties.
KetoCal
What is KetoCal?
KetoCal is a range of nutritional products developed specifically for medical ketogenic diet. The products have a defined ketogenic ratio and come in different variants. There are both powders and ready-made liquid products. Some KetoCal products are nutritionally complete and can, when healthcare professionals decide, be used as a larger or smaller part of total nutrition.
What does for example KetoCal 4:1 mean?
4:1 describes the product's ketogenic ratio. It means 4 grams of fat for every 1 gram of protein and carbohydrate combined. A pre-defined ratio means the product's nutritional composition is known when it's included in the calculation of a ketogenic meal.
KetoCal can also be used in food
KetoCal doesn't necessarily have to be drunk or given alone. Depending on which KetoCal variant is used, the recipe and the individual meal plan, KetoCal can also be used as an ingredient in calculated ketogenic recipes. This means KetoCal can be combined with other carefully calculated ingredients and be part of a complete ketogenic meal.
Why can this be useful?
For many families, medical keto isn't just about achieving the right ratio on paper. The food also has to actually be eaten. The ability to integrate nutritional products into different dishes can therefore provide more options when working with taste, consistency and variety. In short: KetoCal is ketogenic special nutrition with a defined ratio. Several KetoCal products can also be used as an ingredient in calculated ketogenic recipes.
K.Yo
What is K.Yo?
K.Yo is a ready-made, semi-solid ketogenic food with a 3:1 ratio. The product is nutritionally complete and has a soft and smooth consistency. According to the manufacturer, K.Yo is intended from 3 years of age and should be used under medical supervision.
More than just a tub
It's easy to assume that K.Yo should only be eaten straight from the tub. K.Yo can also be included as a component in other calculated ketogenic meals if this fits with the meal plan. It can provide opportunities for variation in taste, serving and consistency.
K.Yo can be used as a component in desserts, toppings, fillings or other calculated ketogenic dishes.
In short: K.Yo is ready-made ketogenic food with a 3:1 ratio that can be used alone or included in other calculated ketogenic meals.
MCTprocal
MCT also comes in forms other than liquid oil. MCTprocal is an example of a product that provides MCT in powder form. Powder and liquid oil have different practical properties in food, and the powder form can therefore provide different possibilities when MCT is to be included in a meal.
In short: MCTprocal is another way to provide MCT. The powder form means the product can be used in different types of calculated dishes.
Other products you may encounter
There are several types of special products for ketogenic nutrition. Which products are relevant varies with the type of diet, age and the individual treatment plan.
Think ingredients, not just products
When you're completely new to medical keto, it's easy to see KetoCal, Liquigen, K.Yo, MCT and other special products as something that always has to be eaten or drunk separately. This doesn't always have to be the case. Several of the products can, when it fits with the meal plan, be used as ingredients in food. This can open up far more possibilities for taste, consistency and variety than it might seem at the very beginning.
New to medical keto?
If all this seems like a lot to take in, you're not alone. At the start, you suddenly encounter words like ratio, ketones, gram weighing, MCT, Liquigen, KetoCal, fat, protein and carbohydrates. It takes time to get to know everything. You don't need to know everything on the first day. Ketolio is designed to help you understand this little by little.
