Ratio / keto ratio
The keto ratio expresses the relationship between fat and protein + carbohydrate in the diet. A 4:1 ratio means 4 grams of fat for every 1 gram of protein and carbohydrate combined.
What do the numbers mean?
The ratio is calculated from the calorie content: fat provides 9 kcal per gram, while protein and carbohydrates each provide 4 kcal per gram. A 3:1 ratio means that the fat's calories are three times the sum of the calories from protein and carbohydrates.
Common therapeutic ratios
Typical therapeutic ratios are 4:1 (highest fat content), 3:1 (common for GLUT1) and 2:1 (more flexible). Which ratio is used is individual and medically determined. The choice is always made in collaboration with treating healthcare professionals.
Small deviations matter
Small deviations in the amount of fat, protein or carbohydrates can change the ratio noticeably. Therefore, precise weighing and calculation are crucial. This is exactly what Ketolio helps with – making the calculations quickly and accurately.
