Berries
Berries are the most carbohydrate-friendly fruit and can be used in small amounts. They provide flavor, color and some variety in an otherwise strict diet.
Berries with the least carbohydrate
Lingonberries, raspberries and strawberries have relatively little carbohydrate. They can be used in small amounts, for example in a dessert with cream. Weigh accurately – even berries contribute carbohydrate.
Berries with more carbohydrate
Blueberries, blackcurrants and gooseberries have somewhat more carbohydrate. They can be used, but in even smaller amounts. Fruit such as banana, apple, grapes and mango have too much carbohydrate and are normally not used.
Use in desserts
Berries can give a little sweetness in a cream or cream cheese dessert. Serve berries in the amount agreed with the clinical dietitian, and calculate the carbohydrate content accurately.
