Grams and amounts
With a therapeutic ketogenic diet, everything is calculated in grams. It is not enough to know that something is "a little" or "a handful" – the amount must be exact.
Why grams matter
Since the ratio depends on exact amounts of fat, protein and carbohydrate, an estimated measure can change the calculation significantly. For example, a tablespoon of oil can vary by several grams depending on how much is poured, and this affects the ratio for the entire meal.
Wet vs. dry weight
Liquids can be measured in milliliters, but for accurate calculation it is often best to weigh everything in grams – including liquids. One milliliter of water weighs approximately one gram, but oil and cream have different densities.
Calculate everything – even the small
Even small amounts like a squeeze of lemon, a teaspoon of ketchup or a little milk in the sauce must be weighed and calculated. It is the sum of all ingredients that gives the final nutritional content for the meal.
