Grandparents
Grandparents are often happy to spoil their grandchildren with food. It requires an open conversation about what the diet entails and why it is important.
Have the conversation early
Talk with grandparents as early as possible after the diagnosis. Explain that the diet is medicine, not a choice, and that small deviations can matter. Be clear, but also patient – it takes time to understand.
Give them the tools
Teach grandparents to use the kitchen scale, read the nutrition declaration and follow a recipe. Let them help make a meal under supervision the first few times. It gives confidence and understanding of the precision required.
Pre-calculated meals
In the beginning, it is easiest to send pre-calculated meals that grandparents just heat and serve. As they become confident, they can make their own meals from recipes you have approved.
Agree on clear boundaries
Agree that grandparents do not give extra candy, snacks or cake without it being calculated and agreed with you. Suggest ketogenic alternatives they can have ready – for example a favorite recipe for ketogenic cake.
