Restaurant
Eating at a restaurant with a ketogenic diet is demanding, but not impossible. It requires planning and good communication with the restaurant.
Call in advance
Call the restaurant well in advance of the visit. Explain the diet – that it is medical, that the food must be calculated accurately, and that the child cannot eat from the regular menu. Ask if they can adapt a dish with extra butter, oil or cream.
Bring your own supplement
Even if the restaurant can adapt, it is often safest to bring your own fat (butter, MCT oil) and possibly your own dessert. Ask for a simple dish – for example a steak or fish fillet – and add your own fat to hit the ratio.
Be clear when ordering
When you arrive, remind the waiter of the agreement. Be clear that the child should not have bread, potatoes, rice, sauce with starch or dessert from the menu. Ask that the food be served without side dishes that are not agreed.
Calculate afterwards
After the meal: calculate the nutritional content as accurately as possible from the ingredients. For fat-rich dishes (steak with butter, salmon with hollandaise) it is often possible to get close to the ratio. For uncertain dishes, bring your own meal instead.
