Friends and social situations
Social situations with friends present challenges – shared snacks, joint meals, temptations. Here is how you and the child can navigate.
Teach the child early
Start early teaching the child to say "I have my own food" and to ask you before eating anything uncertain. Practice what to say when someone offers candy or snacks. The child can explain that the food is special for their body.
Send own snacks
When the child is visiting friends, send ketogenic snacks that the child likes. Talk with the host family in advance and explain that the child has their own food. Most are understanding when they understand that it is medical.
Be present when needed
For younger children, it may be necessary to be present during visits. As the child gets older and more confident, they can manage more on their own. Consider age, maturity and how well you know the host family.
