Birthdays
Birthdays are one of the most difficult situations for a child on a ketogenic diet. With planning and creative solutions, the child can also join in the celebration.
Make a ketogenic cake
Make a ketogenic variant of birthday cake in advance. There are good recipes for ketogenic cake with almond flour, butter, eggs and sweetener (if allowed). Decorate with berries or cream. The child gets their own cake and feels included.
Talk with the host family
Contact the host family well in advance of the birthday. Explain the diet and agree on what the child can eat. Offer to bring your own cake and snacks. Most parents are understanding when they understand that it is medical.
Own favorites
It is a good idea to have a favorite recipe for ketogenic cake or festive food that the child especially likes. Having something to look forward to makes the child not feel left out. Let the child help choose what to make.
Focus on the social
Help the child focus on the social – games, play, being together – not just the food. Some children care little about cake, others need extra support. Be present and help navigate the situation.
